Abstract. Technical progress in the field of virtual reality actualizes the ontological problem of relation between reality and simulation creating the need for philosophical understanding of boundary between the physical world and the virtual one. The authors, relying on the tradition of the statement of the so-called "main issue of philosophy", offer an updated version of it. What comes first, simulation or reality? The findings of modern science suggest that sociogenic, psychogenic and man-made simulations create models of reality in which a person’s life flows. Simulation is a necessary component of consciousness and social life.
