Abstract. The article examines the relevant problem of foreign tourism organization in Karelia in the 1960s. Analysing the wide range of archival sources, the author concludes that Karelia as a border region maintaining close cultural and historical relations with Finland played an important role in the creation of the USSR positive image among the Finnish people. Limited number of sightseeing objects, lack of national colour, undeveloped infrastructure, poor assortment of souvenir items - all the above mentioned allows the author to consider Karelia as a region of ethnical tourism.
