PURPOSES AND CAUSES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN DISCOURSE OF THE LEADING RUSSIAN PRINT MEDIA (1914)

Abstract. The article analyses the major Russian print media publications of 1914 covering domestic publicists’ discussion on the causes and purposes of the First World War. In fact, there was a wide range of opinions, even in the editions of the same political orientation. It is shown that the right-wing press and nationalistically minded authors interpreted the confrontation between the powers as "racial struggle". According to the liberal press, the global conflict was a natural consequence of nationalism and chauvinism propagation in Germany. The affair was depicted as a sacred war of the Slavs and the Germans with deep national and religious roots.
