THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES AS BACKGROUND OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: PROS AND CONS

Abstract. The article discusses the role and importance of the Treaty of Versailles in the formation of the post-war system of international relations. The paper provides a critical analysis of the widespread scientific thesis that the origins of the Second World War lie in the humiliating and flawed Treaty of Versailles, which became a basis of revanchist sentiments in Germany and contributed to the rise of the Nazis to power. On the basis of the study, the author shows the need for the comprehensive and balanced consideration of the issue because of dynamism and flexibility of the Versailles system.
