FREE WILL AS FOUNDATION OF MORAL ACTION: SCHOPENHAUER VS KANT

Abstract. The article provides a comparative analysis of the free will concept in the works of the German philosophers I. Kant and A. Schopenhauer. It is shown that, regardless of slightly different views on free will as moral responsibility, both philosophers agreed that will is strictly determined: by categorical imperative with Kant and by the nature itself, including an individual’s inner nature, with A. Schopenhauer. The findings allow the author to conclude that establishing moral duty towards others as imperative and interpreting moral actions exclusively as compassion lead to complete negation of an egoistic element of human actions’ internal motivation.
