XINJIANG PROVINCE IN THE SOVIET-CHINESE RELATIONS (1941-1942)

Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the interaction of the USSR with the National Government of the Republic of China and Sheng Shicai’s administration regarding Xinjiang Province in 1941-1942. Characterizing the situation in the Far East at the beginning of the 1940s the author identifies the factors that caused the weakening of Russia’s position in Eastern Turkestan, traces changes in the political course of the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs. Special attention is paid to the analysis of Chiang Kai-shek’s policy aimed to weaken the Soviet influence in North-western China and to consolidate Kuomintang’s power in the region.
