M. A. ZAKHAROV’S PERFORMANCE "FALSTAFF AND THE PRINCE OF WALES" (THE LENKOM THEATRE, 2018): PLOT, COMPOSITION, GENRE, WAY OF ACTOR’S EXISTENCE

Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the performance "Falstaff and the Prince of Wales", the culmination of the creative work of M. A. Zakharov (1933-2019), a representative of the brilliant pleiad of stage directors of the sixties, the director of the Lenkom Theatre for forty five years and a brilliant art director. The paper focuses on studying scenic poetics of the performance. Research methodology includes: 1) methods to study poetics of works of fiction developed within the formal school of literary criticism; 2) methods to reconstruct and analyse a performance developed within Leningrad (Gvozdev) school of theatre studies; 3) approaches to studying director’s strategies developed within Petersburg school of Meyerhold studies; 4) the method of contextual analysis. The study aims to reconstruct the performance and to analyse the basic components of its poetics. The research objectives are as follows: 1) to reconstruct the performance; 2) to identify the director’s plot and the methods of the plot composition; 3) to analyse scenography from the viewpoint of spatial-temporal arrangement; 4) to clarify compositional principles of the performance arrangement; 5) to identify the genre nature of the performance; 6) to identify the ways of actor’s existence and to reveal their meaning; 7) to identify the place and role of this performance in M. A. Zakharov’s creative work.
