Abstract. The article analyses the contribution of D. Kellner, a representative of the "third generation" of Frankfurt school, to the development of critical theory of society. Influenced by Guy Debord, Kellner considers the modern society as a subsequent stage of the "society of the spectacle" when gamification in interpretation of events depends on how they are represented by media personalities. The philosopher defines this system as a "media spectacle", which serves as a link between authoritative structures and the population. The mass media provide apportioned information seeking to control the society and to form public opinion.
