D. F. TSAPLIN’S BARNAUL PERIOD AND ITS ROLE IN THE FORMATION OF THE ALTAI SCULPTURE

Abstract. The article considers the creative work of D. F. Tsaplin (1890-1967), the Russian sculptor who made a significant contribution to the development of the psychological portrait genre and animalistics. In the late 90s of the last century, his creative heritage was essentially lost. Currently, there are serious attempts to reconstruct the artist’s creative method, to analyse his works, to describe the basic periods of his life and creation. Only a few of his works are now available in the Russian and foreign museums. In Russia, the artist was associated with three cities: Saratov, Moscow and Barnaul. For the first time, the article describes Tsaplin’s stay in Barnaul during the Great Patriotic War and his works of that period. D. F. Tsaplin’s role in the formation of the Altai sculpture is ascertained.
