ISLAM IN THE LIFE OF THE OB UGRIANS AS A FACTOR OF THEIR CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL PSYCHOLOGY: SOURCES AND METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS

Abstract. The article analyses sources on the history of Islam in the culture of the Northern indigenous peoples, such as the Ob Ugrians (the Khanty and the Mansi): the Siberian chronicles, works of decorative and applied art, ethnographic materials. The paper provides methodological justification of the "impoverished environment" conception, which explains the mechanism of cultural borrowings under the North conditions. The authors conclude that the intensive penetration of Islam into the Ob Ugrian culture resulted in assimilation of some Khanty and Mansi tribes by the Siberian Tatars, and the Zabolotnie Tatars remained the only representatives of the Islamized (Turkicized) Khanty.
