STYLE PECULIARITIES OF VLADIMIR SHCHERBACHEV’S PIANO MUSIC

Abstract. The article is devoted to identifying the typical characteristics of Vladimir Shcherbachev’s piano style through the lenses of the general features of the composer’s style. Analysing Shcherbachev’s most significant piano compositions ("Unexpected Joy"; The Second Sonata for Piano; "Inventions"; "Invention", opus 15) the author for the first time examines how they adopted the aesthetics and style of the key "new music" trends of the 1910-1920s (modernism, neo-classicism, avant-garde, etc.). The paper focuses on the typical contradictions occurring as a result of paradoxical combination of different tone arrangement methods (for example, tonality in its traditional interpretation and innovative principles correlating with complicated tonal forms in A. Scriabin’s, P. Hindemith’s, S. Prokofiev’s music). The author emphasizes that these contradictions in Shcherbachev’s piano music manifest themselves as an integrated whole representing the specificity of the artistic worldview of the first third of the XX century.
