AMOUNT AND STAFF OF PRISONERS OF TOBOLSK SPECIAL ISOLATION WARD (1924-1929)

Abstract. Relying on previously unknown archival documents the author analyses the amount and staff of the prisoners of Tobolsk special isolation ward (1924-1929). The research is based on the modernization theory. General scientific, historical, source study methods are used. The author concludes that the amount of the prisoners over the whole period exceeded the norms (400 persons) by more than 1,5-2 times, which coincides with the all-Russian rates. Prison overcrowding influenced negatively the material provision of prisoners and security guards, prison regime, the prisoners’ labour and living conditions.
