Abstract. The article discusses two ways to solve the problem of life meaning: by L. N. Tolstoy and by F. M. Dostoyevsky. Rationalism, normativity, moralism in relation to life and pseudo-folk origins of L. N. Tolstoy failed in the face of his own death. F. M. Dostoevsky comprehended and experienced this problem in the nationalistic way, taking root in faith in God, loving his land and his people sincerely and deeply. In solving this problem, he departed from rationalism, moralism, psychologism and subjectivism, and gave it the quality of ontological depth and multidimensionality.
