Issues and Experiences with Creating a Foreign Language Textbook for a Non-Linguistic University

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to describe the basic principles of designing a textbook that meets the modern requirements of the theory and practice of teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The authors analysed the available educational materials for language teaching at an aviation university, described the criteria for their evaluation and proposed a variant of a textbook concept. Scientific novelty of the study lies in identifying approaches to the design of a foreign language textbook in a professional area that forms students’ foreign language communicative competence (learner-centered approach) and methodologically organises the language and speech material of the textbook (teacher-centered approach). The results have shown that author’s textbooks should be communicative, professionally and personally oriented, include authentic and relevant language material, take into account students’ language skills.
