Abstract. In the article, little-known facts of the biography of the prominent Russian educator Dmitrii Dmitrievich Semenov (1834/1835-1902) are revealed. His progressive pedagogical views and active efforts made during the opening of new educational institutions are characterized. The period of his practical pedagogical activity at the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens, where he worked under the direction of K. D. Ushinsky, is shown in detail. D. D. Semenov appears in the work as one of the initiators of women’s education in Russia, as a founder and a leader of the first pedagogical colleges in the south of the country, the Kuban and Transcaucasian Teachers’ Training Colleges.
