Abstract. The article reveals the facts of the biography of the outstanding Russian teacher of the second half of the XIX century Nikolai Ivanovich Ilminsky, describes his educational activity. Special attention is paid to the determination of his contribution to the development of the education of the Middle-Volga peoples. The paper characterizes the attitude to the pedagogical heritage left by N. I. Ilminsky in different historical periods.
