Abstract. The article examines class and land relations in Dagestan in the middle of the XIX century on the eve of the reforms that were carried out by the government, as well as the class structure. The measures of the tsarist government on changing the estate-land system in Dagestan in the XIX century are shown. Relying on archival and other sources the author describes the social and legal status of different categories of the peasantry and class and land relations in certain parts of Dagestan. The paper analyzes the feudal duties, which were performed by dependent peasants in return for land, and land rights of the upper class. Having analyzed documentary sources the author concludes that private (mulk) landownership was widely practiced in Dagestan long before its attachment to Russia.
