Abstract. The article is devoted to analyzing the process of professionalization of the Arabic periodical press in the period of transition from the traditional Ottoman society of the end of the XIX century to the modern society of the first half of the XX century. The authors examine the specificity of journalists’ social status, the changes in the legislation on the press, the early development of professional training and the establishment of the first professional union of the Arabic journalists. The researchers conclude that professionalization of the Arabic journalism occurred in the historically short period against the background of contradictions typical of the traditional society entering the epoch of transformation.
