Abstract. The Cossacks as a unique phenomenon of Russian centuries-old history have recently evoked a great scientific and social interest. The problems of origin, essence and historical role of the Cossacks still attract the attention of researchers from different fields of knowledge. The following issues are considered especially relevant: adequate interpretation of the Cossacks’ role in the attachment of the North Caucasus territories to Russia and integration of the Cossacks into the Russian state system. The authors examine the most significant events and milestones of the Terek Cossacks formation in the reign of Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great.
