Abstract. Some social processes in the modern Russian society are of particular concern to most of our citizens. One of such processes is religious extremism, the main characteristic of which is violence. It is important for the public to have scientific understanding of causes and possible consequences of such manifestations of religious feelings. The article argues that the main cause of the man’s return to medieval dogmatism is archaic memes, which are spread actively using modern means of mass communication.
