Abstract. The article examines development of cooperation between the Russian Far East and Japan in the sphere of culture at the end of the XX - the beginning of the XXI century. The author shows that the vector of intercultural cooperation between the two countries is focused on approaching the nations, establishing more close contacts, which certainly promotes consolidation of economic and political relations between Russia and Japan. Territorial proximity of the Russian Far East and Japan promotes developing cultural dialogue. At the beginning of the XXI century, in spite of the existing misunderstandings between the two countries on certain issues, cultural cooperation broadens due to mutual interest.
