Abstract. In the article principles of construction of Greek and Roman theaters of the age of antiquity are compared. It is concluded that the Roman state borrowed a lot from Greek culture, but due to different mentality and policy of the state, Hellenic ideas were partially redesigned and supplemented by the Romans. The author uses written sources and works of modern specialists to cover the issue and gives examples of arrangement of two Greek and Roman theaters.
