Abstract. The article deals with night scenes in Gerard van Honthorst’s domestic genre. Artificial lighting allows getting a kind of dramatic effect in his work. On the basis of consideration of artistic expressive means, mainly methods of working with light-and-shade, a stylistic and compositional analysis is carried out. In this paper the author concludes that the use of artificial lighting for the dramatic effect is the most important element that Honthorst got from the style of Caravaggism. He presented the Italian way of illusionistic design.
