IRAN AT THE HEART OF BRITISH-RUSSIAN CONFRONTATION IN THE 1820S

Abstract. The article is devoted to the history of Russian-British relations in Iran after the Gulistan peace. It reflects dynamics of the shah’s government maneuvering between interests of the two largest powers. The events of the Russo-Persian War of 1826-1828 are described. The Turkmanchay agreements and their consequences are considered. It is shown how Tehran, playing the Russian and British cards in rotation, tried to solve its own political issues. It is proved that the weak, but ambitious position of the Iranian government led to escalation of regional tension, which found its way out in the first Herat crisis. At the same time, Tehran itself was in the situation of partial loss of its sovereignty.
