REGNUM NOSTRUM... VESTRE COMMITIMUS POTESTATI IN HENRY II PLANTAGENET’S LETTER TO FREDERICK I BARBAROSSA: AUTHORITY IMAGE, LITERACY AND SEMIOTICS OF MEDIEVAL CULTURE

Abstract. The article discovers importance of Henry II Plantagenet’s letter to Frederick I Barbarossa, in which he acknowledges himself an Empire’s vassal. The artifact is considered in the context of medieval monarchies formation and peculiarities of the medieval written culture. The mentioned document preserves continuity with the early Middle Ages (Carolingian period), when the Empire conception dominated. The letter should be interpreted not as a legal document but as a representation of oral, often secret agreements that formed the basis of the medieval political culture.
