Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the position of the liberal magazine "The Bulletin of Europe" in the 1880s in relation to the ethno-confessional issue and freedom of conscience. The paper analyzes publications of the edition about religious education, the condition of the gentiles and the Jews. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that the position of the magazine was based on the requirement of equality of all the people before the law regardless of national and religious belonging, the main guarantor and conductor of which must be the state.
