Abstract. The article examines problems of preparation and execution of the first national population census of 1897 in Saransk and the district. The paper describes in detail activity of Saransk district census commission to organize the census in the town and the district. The authors analyze the class, educational, religious and national structure of the population according to the national census results and provide data on the citizens’ most popular occupations.
