Abstract. The article deals with the problem of teaching non-Russian population in Bashkiria in the second half of the XIX - the early XX century. On the basis of poorly studied archival materials the goal is determined - to characterize the origin of educational institutions for non-Russian population, specificity of organization of pedagogical process in them. It is concluded that due to activity of these schools there was an increase in literacy of non-Russian population, awareness of their own identity, active involvement in Russian and world culture.
