Abstract. The article describes Dagestan traditional woman’s head shawls. History of their origin is poorly investigated. Interest for them has grown over the last decades of de-islamization. On the basis of linguistic materials from Dagestan languages ( ashmag - shawl name, etc.) the authors identify foreign influences on their origin in Dagestan. These influences did not result in imitation of Islamic clothing. Dagestan woman’s shawls are democratic in the wearing style, fabric colours and differ cardinally from Islamic forms of head shawls.
