CLOTHES AND ATTRIBUTES OF A MATCHMAKER-MEDIATOR AMONG THE CHUVASH PEOPLE

Abstract. The article aims to show peculiarities of appearance of a Chuvash matchmaker-mediator, whose duties included conducting pre-wedding negotiations with the fianc?e’s parents. On the basis of literary and archival sources the paper examines certain "peculiarities" of a matchmaker’s clothes and describes items he should have had. According to the author, masquerade elements in a matchmaker’s costume were, on the one hand, to emphasize his special status and to inform people on his mission, and, on the other hand, promote success of the whole matchmaking ritual.
