PROBLEM OF FREEDOM OF WILL IN WEST EUROPEAN MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY

Abstract. The article presents medieval conceptions of freedom of will. Libertas (freedom) is comprehended as a manifestation of human nature perfection. Aspiration of philosophers of the Middle Ages for solving the problem of free decision - liberum arbitrium - and the law of retribution for violation of Divine statutes leads to appearance of a new problem: staying within the limits of theocentrism, the medieval thought loses connection with the living gospel tradition, with which its history begins.
