Abstract. The article examines activity of the art studio of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions as an institution illustrating logic of the USSR amateur art development. Relying on sources the author describes the studio’s purposes, forms of teaching, specificity of the curriculum and peculiarities of the educational process. The paper also discovers implicit, unofficial aspects of the art studio’s activity, identifies methodological peculiarities of the academic work.
