LIFE OF BION OF BORYSTHENES: SOURCES AND HISTORIOGRAPHY

Abstract. The article deals with the reports of ancient and medieval authors about the Hellenistic philosopher Bion of Borysthenes - a native of Olbia, the North-Baltic colony. Also, the generalizing information about the historiographic tradition, devoted to Bion, is given. The paper identifies the questions that turned out to be most controversial in the study of the biography and heritage of the philosopher: his ethnic and social background, the main stages of the biography, the nature of philosophy. The author of the article offers her own interpretation of contradictory information about the origin of Bion.
