FROM FETISH TO POWER: CORPORAL DISEASES IN THE LATE ANTIQUE CULTURE

Abstract. The article is devoted to the central attitudes to corporal diseases that were formed in the late antique culture. The original content of one of such attitudes developed in the context of the early Christian anthropology is revealed. The bases of the tradition of healing by the tormented bodies of the Christian martyrs, their verbal and visual representations are analyzed. The consideration touches upon the temporal structure of the future openness actualized by the images of martyrs’ sacrificial deeds.
