TRADITIONAL KARACHAY TRANSHUMANCE SYSTEM (THE XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY)

Abstract. The article examines traditional transhumance system developed by the Karachay mountain community in the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century. The paper emphasizes that in the pre-Soviet period cattle-breeding came out as a life-sustaining activity for the Karachay people. Under severe mountainous conditions the Karachay people managed to develop a profitable economy which in most cases provided comparatively high living standard (among the Caucasian people).The author focuses on such elements of cattle breeding as transhumance and its peculiarities, sheep cutting, horse care, branding, etc.
