Abstract. The article analyzes the world perception of the late Roman Empire by the example of the key novels of the I and II centuries A.D. - "Satyricon" by Petronius Arbiter and "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius - which intuitively anticipate the decay of Antiquity in the broad sense of the word. The paper provides the comparative characteristic of the Empire’s everyday life as it is presented by Petronius and Roman lifestyle in Apuleius’s novel. In "Satyricon" the Empire’s life is full of growing skepticism replaced with absurdism. In "Metamorphoses" the Empire’s image is dialectical: it is divided into profane and sacral.
