THE ROLE OF CHARITIES FOR THE POOR CLERGY IN THE MATERIAL SUPPORT OF THE ORTHODOX PARISH CLERGY OF THE CENTRAL CHERNOZEM REGION IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX - AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

Abstract. The article discusses the role of the charities for the poor clergy in the material support of the Orthodox parish clergy in the Central Chernozem region in the second half of the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century. In the post-reform era the need to improve the life of the clergy and clergymen was repeatedly discussed in the pages of both church and secular periodicals. Particular attention was paid to the situation of the out-of-staff clergy and their families. On the basis of published sources and archival materials the author analyzes the contribution of the diocesan charities of the Voronezh, Kursk, Orel and Tambov dioceses to improving the financial situation of the supernumerary pastors. The studied materials lead to the conclusion that local charitable institutions were not able to provide tangible assistance to needy clergymen and were extremely ineffective.
