Abstract. In the article the existence of various attitudes in the interpretation of the phenomena "modernity" and "modernism" is shown. The idea of the necessity to study the origin of graphic design in the context of the peculiarities of modernism as the world outlook of the era at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries is substantiated. The influence of the values of modernism on graphic design (belief in progress, social functionalism) is identified. The author shows that the orientation of design-graphics on the use of minimalist aesthetic means is subordinated to the tasks of effective communications.
