Abstract. The article investigates history of formation and existence of the cult of the Shinto god Ebisu - the patron of fishing and trade - in Japanese folk culture. The image of Ebisu is viewed through the lenses of traditional folk ideas of him as a patron associated with producing magic. The author notes steady compliance with tradition in modern forms of worship of the God, in festivals and benevolent bazaars held in his honour. Attention is drawn to diversity of functions and images of Ebisu, which enables to consider ancient folklore and mythological connections of this God with the supreme gods of the Japanese Shinto pantheon.
