FUNCTIONS OF CONVENTIONALITY IN THE BOOK ILLUSTRATION

Abstract. The article is devoted to investigating conventionality in the literary illustration. The author emphasizes the dependence of conventionality on the affiliation of an illustration to the book block and on its purpose to express literary content. Relying on the conducted analysis the author identifies three functions of conventionality in the book illustration: plastic, objective, sign ones. The proposed classification satisfies the nature of conventionality as a conscious modification included in the structure of the illustration’s linguistic tools and aimed to achieve its purposes.
