Abstract. Relying on the materials of Kizlyar Commandant Archive the article examines trade in coastal Dagestan in the XVIII century. A trade route, which passed through Kumykia, was dangerous for merchants-travellers, who were often attacked by the local residents. The Russian authorities wished to secure the trade route of coastal Dagestan, forbade the local feudal lords and their subjects to commit plunder on the roads. Kizlyar commandants’ policy was aimed to provide secure trade in Dagestan on the whole.
