Abstract. The article examines K. A. Somov’s watercolour landscapes of different periods of his creative work. The paper emphasizes how the painter establishes a colour motive, which encourages creating a true expressive image of a state of nature. According to the author, Somov’s pictures executed in the watercolour technique can be considered as an autonomous art genre due to their picturesque qualities (sensitiveness while transferring the colour of nature).
