Abstract. The article is devoted to the research of the functions of the image in scientific cognition. The image is understood as a set of sensual signals isomorphic to the content of the object-original and subjectively experienced as the object itself. It is ascertained that images perform the following functions in scientific cognition: a) act as an intermediate while an idea development in the direction of its practical implementation, b) understanding, translation and generalization of knowledge, c) medium of structures generating new knowledge.
