Abstract. The article examines civilization contradictions in Eurasia, first of all at the Balkan Peninsula. The dichotomy "East - West" experienced cardinal changes during thousands of years but it still comes out as a basis of geopolitical confrontation. Balkan countries, which are a battlefield of civilizations, can preserve their identity and true independence only under the condition of a federation formation and close partnership with Russia.
