Abstract. The article analyzes the basic contents of the notion "consumer society" as a process of an individual’s attribution of him(her)self by means of communion with certain material and nonmaterial welfare and the genesis of this notion in works by T. V. Adorno, M. Horkheimer, H. Marcuse, J. Baudrillard, E. Fromm. The main ideas of the mentioned authors about the development of the then European society are given. The analysis and contrastive comparison of their views are conducted .
