Abstract. The article analyzes the value preferences of the provincial resident by the example of Nizhniy Novgorod. The role of classical culture, implemented in scientific knowledge, the system of secular education and enlightenment, in the formation of socio-cultural goals and the subjective estimation of the quality of the residents’ life is examined. The cultural needs of the megapolis residents and the degree of their satisfaction are considered.
