THE URAL COSSACKS’ SERVICE AT SOUTHERN AND SOUTH-EASTERN BORDERS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN THE XVIII-XIX CENTURIES

Abstract. The article shows the Ural (before 1775 - Yaik) Cossacks’ role in guarding the south-eastern borders of the Russian Empire in the XVIII-XIX centuries and in joining Central Asia to Russia. The author reconstructs the successive chronology of the Ural Cossacks’ participation in these campaigns, their special role and high militant qualities allowing them to be justly considered the best in such campaigns. The reliable protection of the extended border line by small forces also testifies for their high military skill.
