Abstract. The article discovers the role of Oriental Institute in broadening the conceptions of the Russian society about China of the beginning of the XX century. The author mentions the most authoritative researchers (P. P. Schmidt, A. V. Rudakov, N. V. K?hner, A. M. Pozdneev), identifies the thematic orientation of their works. Special attention is paid to describing the image of China, which was formed in 1900-1916 in the pages of Russian periodicals. The paper provides the analysis of the socio-economic and political processes that occurred in China at the beginning of the XX century.
