CHARACTER OF PHILIP II OF SPAIN AS IT IS EVALUATED BY MODERN EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN HISPANISTS

Abstract. The article describes the character of Philip II Habsburg, discovers how he is represented in the modern European and, partly, American historiography. The authors examine the typical examples of interpretations developed within different explanatory models: the problem of Philip II’s character becomes debatable due to its importance and contradictoriness and also due to the stereotypes that were formed around Spain of the XVI century. The paper concludes on modern tendencies in the historiography satisfying the demands of objectivity in contrast to the ideologization and stereotyping of knowledge.
