Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of a person’s self-identification in totalitarian society. Applying to the novel by A. Genatulin "Enclosure" the author aims to understand the essence of creative process, the search for the artist’s original "I" under the conditions of the political regime for the deeper understanding of the problems of a modern human. The paper describes not only the pictures of an individual’s vulnerability before anonymous totalitarian power but, above everything, the cruelty of existence, which is opposed to the self-sacrifice of a single personality. F. Kafka and other outstanding writers of the XX century prophetically forecasted in their works the alarming tendencies of anti-human social development. The younger generation of writers, such as Genatulin, has already blamed real fascism and real forms of national dictatorships.
